Welcome to Fall 2024, WRIT 3150 and WRIT 3152

Welcome to our first class meeting; I’m using this post to share several resources for our work during the first week.

Discord

We’ll talk about this during our first class, but I will be using this Discord for a large portion of activities and communication this semester (minus grades and graded-oriented feedback). Please join the following Discord server for the class that you’re taking with me. Create a Discord account using your KSU email. Unfortunately, this may require some people to build a separate Discord account than the one they already have (we’ll talk about why this may be a good thing).

WRIT 3150: Ethics in genAI, discord link

WRIT 3152: Digital Community Engagement, discord link

Please be sure to join the correct one depending on your course, and email me if you have a question (pete@kennesaw.edu). I do not use D2L email/messaging.

Syllabus

Updated:
Syllabi for WRIT 3150 and WRIT 3152 are available in D2L (under “Announcements” and “Content”) or via the links below:

WRIT 3150 Ethics in genAI syllabus

WRIT 3152: Digital Community engagement syllabus

Reading

Please read the following text by Wednesday, 8/14, and be ready for an activity on them that will be due by Friday, 8/16.

WRIT 3150: Ethics in genAI: “AI in Higher Education: Trajectories and Questions” published by the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics

WRIT 3152: “Chapter 1: What is Rhetorical Theory” in Atilla Hallsby’s The Rhetoric UnTextbook; and “The Inside Story of How Silicon Valley Rewired Our Brains” on the Offline podcast.

Activities this week

I will be posting a list of classroom activities here by 8am, Wednesday, 8/14, and informing everyone via KSU email and Discord. Please be looking for them. In the meantime, please complete the activity I describe to you in class on the first day. If you don’t attend the first class, please reach out to me via email to let me know that you didn’t attend and to ask for it.

WRIT 3150: Open a WordPress blogging space on a self-hosted domain (NOT on wordpress.com, Wix, Weebly, or Squarespace). Here’s a link of some content that I’ve published that will help you get started with Reclaim Hosting (whom I recommend).

WRIT 3152: In our first class, I will assign you a role of collector or analyst and define those roles for you. If you’re a collector, identify yourself as a collector by opening and naming a thread on the #activities channel on discord by Wed., 8/14 and complete your work by Thurs., 8/15. If you’re an analyst, complete your work within a specific collector’s thread by Friday, 8/16. Do not complete analyst work for a collection thread that someone has already analyzed unless all collector threads have been analyzed (if you have to do that, be sure to offer something new in your analysis).
