Here are the steps for choosing an internship and registering for internship course credit in the English Department:
My name is Dr. Pete Rorabaugh. As the Internship Coordinator for KSU’s ENGL Department, I approve the requests to enroll in the internship course, and I like to talk applicants to hear about where you’re looking, to suggest ideas, and to learn about internship offers you’ve received. As you begin your internship journey, please fill out this form and then click here to schedule a virtual or f2f appointment with me.
- Search for internships on KSU’s Handshake portal, LinkedIn, Indeed, and/or a search on the open web.
- Explore the possibility of on-campus internship options with other faculty and staff; I can share opportunities that exist within the ENGL department.
- Let me know if you are interested in working with any of my non-profit org partners in Atlanta (currently 48in48, Center for Civic Innovation, and Civic Tech Atlanta).
- Get entrepreneurial! If there’s a company, non-profit, or individual whose work you find interesting, ask them if they have hosted internships before and, if they haven’t, let’s explore whether we can develop that together with them.
- Choose a community partner who is willing to work with you.
- Negotiate an internship experience that you think will be beneficial to you and conforms to your schedule, transportation availability, and professional interests.
- Clear that experience with me via an email exchange or Teams call (see my bookings page above).
- Obtain an offer letter from the community partner that includes:
- The name and contact information of your internship supervisor
- Exact start and end dates for the term of your internship
- Whether the experience will be unpaid or paid (and at what rate)
- A commitment to giving you 10-15 hrs of work per week for fall or spring semesters (20-25 hrs of work per week for an 8-week summer semester)
- A brief description of duties you will be responsible for, including the frequency and duration of check-in meetings
- An “offer letter” can exist in any format (including an email) as long as you can upload a PDF of it to Handshake.
- While you are logged in to KSU’s Handshake platform, click the “Career center” menu button on the left, then the “Experiences” tile, then the “Submit an Experience” button; follow those steps.
- Remember that a 3-credit hour internship course needs the student to have a commitment to the appropriate amount of work hours (see “Step Three” above).
- In the “additional materials” field upload a PDF of your offer letter (as defined in “Step Three” above).
- Once you have completed the “Submit an Experience” button, approval emails will be forwarded to me, your internship supervisor, and KSU’s Career Planning and Development Department (CPD).
- I will email you when I have approved your experience from my end.
- Once all of your approvals have cleared, CPD will send you instructions on how to enroll in the class.
- If you have any issues or questions about the CPD approval process, contact our CPD Coordinator for ENGL internships, Day Young (dyoung93@kennesaw.edu).
- Once you are successfully enrolled in the course, notify me by email.
- Congratulations! Get ready for an energetic internship experience and a reflective time with me in ENGL 3899 or PRWR 7600.
- You can always contact me with questions at pete@kennesaw.edu.
- Once you have successfully registered for the course let me know via email.
- Congratulations! Get ready for an exciting experience with your community partner and a reflective time in ENGL 3899 or PRWR 7600 with me.
